The Sohrabuddin fake encounter case made headlines last year and now, his brother Rababuddin claims he is being harassed by cops in his state Gujarat.
The attempts to arrest him in connection with a local case are made just days ahead of his appearance in court where he is expected to testify in the murders of his brother Sohrabuddin and sister-in-law Kausar Bi.
“There is a feeling of anxiety and suspicion that before the matter of Rubabuddin is heard in SC, there is an attempt to intimidate him and keep him away from pursuing the petition and complaint he has filed on behalf of Sohrabuddin, his brother,” said Mukul Sinha, the advocate for Rubabuddin.
Two teams one from the Gujarat, the other from the Madhya Pradesh raided Rababuddin’s Ahmedabad home and attempted to arrest him.
“Police does not want me to appear before Supreme Court as trial for the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case is going to start on February 3. That is why they have even registered a false criminal case against me. They even tried to pick me up, but villagers rushed in and policemen fled away leaving me for now,” said Rubabuddin Sheikh.
The alleged provocation for the police action was a case that Rubabuddin’s tenant in Ujjain Rajendra Chaplod had filed against him seven months ago.
Chaplod had accused Rubabuddin and two others of threatening him.
“A resident of Nagda, Rajendra Chaplod lodged a complaint with us saying Rubabuddin and two others had threatened him for life if Chaplod does not vacate the rented shop,” said S Narang, the Superintendent of Police in Ujjain.
Rubabuddin, has now written to the Gujarat Director General of Police demanding action against the officers harassing him. He’s also written to the National Human Rights Commission complaining against the Madhya Pradesh policemen.
Gujarat Police officials have refused to comment and have denied the allegations leveled by Rubabuddin. But the question that remains even if Rubabuddin has been charged with threatening his tenant in Ujjain is, why was the Gujarat police involved in the Madhya Pradesh police’s attempt to arrest him?
Interestingly, while Chaplod filed the complaint seven months ago it was converted into an FIR on January 28, just five days before Rubabuddin is to appear before the Supreme Court. So it’s the timing of the police action that’s really raising eyebrows and worrying activists in the highly controversial case that has led to the arrest of several top police officers.
